Named after the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, the IS series of heavy tanks was designed to help the red army break through enemy positions. Its gun fired heavy high-explosive shells that could destroy enemy tanks, entrenchments, and bunkers alike.

The SU-85 and SU-100 were built on the excellent T-34 chassis, replacing the turret with a hull mounted gun. These assault guns were nicknamed ‘Cat-killers’ for their ability to knock out heavy German tanks like the Panther and Tiger.

The M10 GMC (Gun Motor Carriage) blends the manoeuvrability of a tank with the firepower of a heavy 3” (76mm) gun. The open top gave the crews the advantage of much greater awareness of what was happening around them. As the war progressed the turret and gun were upgraded resulting in the M36 ‘Jackson’.

The M3 Lee sported a 75mm main gun mounted in a limited-traverse side sponson, as well as a smaller 37mm gun in its turret. This odd, ungainly vehicle was far from perfect, but it was nevertheless an effective tank that filled a much-needed role at a crucial time.

The Achilles was a British variant of the American M10 tank destroyer armed with the powerful British Ordnance QF 17 pounder anti-tank gun in place of the standard 3” gun. This upgrade allowed the Achilles to face off against all but the heaviest German Panzers.

Based on the Cromwell design, the Comet saw a number of upgrades. A powerful anti-tank gun and extra armour did little to slow the new heavy cruiser down. They reached the front lines late in the war where they helped the Allied forces across the Rhine and into the heart of Germany.

Fitted with the powerful Meteor engine the Cromwell was classed as a cruiser tank and operated as armoured reconnaissance. As the fastest British tank of the war the Cromwell succeeded in battle by outflanking its sluggish opponents.

Tanks: British Grant Tank Expansion
The British army fielded over 2,500 US built Grant tanks during the North African campaign. Larger and more heavily armoured than the other tanks fielded by the British, it mounted a powerful 75mm gun in the hull. The Grant also had a 37mm gun in a small turret that could engage targets that the hull mounted gun could not.

Known as the M3 Stuart in the American army, the Honey was first fielded by the British in North Africa. It picked up the unofficial nickname of Honey after a tank driver remarked “She’s a honey”. Like the British Crusader the Honey was liked by crews for its high speed and was used extensively as a reconnaissance vehicle.

It was the British who gave the American-Built Sherman tanks its name,when they started fielding them en masse during World War II. Rolling into combat for the first time in Normandy the Sherman Firefly was the first British tank capable of defeating the heavy German tanks.

Considered one of the best tanks of World War II for its excellent firepower and protection the Panther tank was Germany’s answer to the Soviet T-34. Built on the same chassis, the Jagdpanzer traded the Panther’s turret for extra armour and a much bigger gun.

The Panzer III is one of the iconic tanks of World War Two. Serving in the German army throughout the war the tank would be upgraded over time with larger guns and heavier armour. During the desert campaign in North Africa it was upgraded with a long 5cm cannon that was capable of knocking out any Allied tank.

The Panzer IV was the most widely manufactured German tank of World War Two. During the North African campaign it was armed with either a short 7.5cm gun that was capable of lobbing a shell over friendly troops, or the long 7.5cm gun that could easily penetrate the armour of heaviest Allied tank.

The Panzer IV was the only German tank to remain in production throughout the war. Continuous upgrades to its armour and weapons allowed it to counter new threats as they appeared on any German front.

The Puma matched a fast and nimble armoured car design with a reliable 50mm cannon that was capable of knocking out enemy Sherman and T-34 tanks. Of course this sometimes tempted the crews to pick fights that they otherwise should have avoided. As the war progressed the Pak Wagen version mounted a 75mm gun in place of the turret.

The original StuG was designed as an infantry support weapon, but in response to skirmishes with Soviet armour it was upgraded with an anti-tank gun and the StuG G was born. With their low, turretless silhouette they proved most effective in defensive roles and were especially deadly when carrying out ambushes.

The German heavy Tigers were the tank the Allies most feared when they landed in Europe. With exceptional armour and mounting the impressive 8.8cm gun they were almost unstoppable, having taken a toll on Allied armour on the Eastern Front and North Africa where T-34 and Sherman tanks were incapable of stopping them.

Tanks: Soviet M10 (Lend-Lease) Tank Expansion
The Lend-Lease program saw thousands of tanks supplied to the Soviet Union during the war. Amongst these were a small number of M10 tank destroyers that somehow found their way to the Eastern Front. Whilst not as heavily armed or armoured as some Soviet designs, the turret meant it was one of the few self-propelled guns that could not easily be outflanked.

From it’s first encounters in 1941 the T-34 would become one of the most influential tank designs of the Second World War. The T-34 was continously refined over the years to increase effectiveness and decrease costs, allowing vast numbers to be fielded at once. Eventually, the T-34/85 variant was built to combat the appearance of heavy German tanks.
